International Field Trip Module

Kells, Co Meath

Over the past number of years the Geography Department at St Patrick's College, Drumcondra (SPD) has offered an International Field Trip Module to Erasmus students.  Recently, fifteen Erasmus students, accompanied by Drs Susan Hegarty and Jonathan Cherry, undertook a fieldtrip to county Meath visiting the symbolic landscape of the Hill of Tara, the monastic town of Kells and the ancient monuments at Sliabh na Calligh and Loughcrew, near Oldcastle, in north county Meath.  Dr Matthew Stout of the History Department, SPD, also accompanied the trip and organised our visit to the largest souterrain in Ireland at Loughcrew.  Loughcrew

This was for all on the trip an unforgettable experience which involved crawling on hands and knees along with lighted candles to experience this amazing place.

The aim of the fieldtrip was twofold: firstly to allow students visit and see some ‘hidden’ parts of the Irish landscape - away from the traditional tourist sites; and secondly to record their experiences in these landscapes and places in terms of the landscapes cultural services and the experiential qualities of these landscapes.
