Eminent Irish Music Scholars visit St Patrick's College
Dr Patrick Zuk (University of Durham) and Séamas de Barra (Cork School of Music/Durham) visited St Patrick’s College recently and lectured to MA in Music students on aspects of Music and Irish National Identity.
In June 2007, Dr Zuk was awarded substantial funding from the British Arts and Humanities Research Council for a major research project on Irish music. The project focuses on the careers and creative achievements of prominent Irish composers since 1890 and involves a new monograph series, Field Day Music, published by the Irish publishing house Field Day in conjunction with the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
Monographs that are either published or in press include
Aloys Fleischmann (by Séamas de Barra) - published
Raymond Deane (by Patrick Zuk) - published
Michele Esposito(by Jeremy Dibble) – in press
John Buckley (by Benjamin Dwyer) – in press
Future projected monographs will include studies of contemporary and historical composers, including Ina Boyle, James Wilson, Seóirse Bodley, Joan Trimble, Havelock Nelson, John Kinsella, A. J. Potter, Robert O’Dwyer and Arthur Duff.
The study devoted to the music of St Patrick’s College staff member John Buckley must surely be without precedent in the college.
Also, two of the projected composer studies, Robert O’ Dwyer (1862-1949) and Arthur Duff (1899-1956), will be authored by Seán Mac Liam, St Patrick’s College. It might also be of interest to note that one of Seán’s composers, is the grandfather of Ciaran O’Dwyer (husband of Bernadette, Conference Officer, St Patrick’s College).
The ultimate aim of all these composer studies is to supply authoritative research for a new multi-authored history of Irish composition which will evaluate music in Ireland over the long twentieth-century.
