Irlande Douze Points

The Geography Department, St Patrick’s College hosted an evening lecture on Thursday 6th May on behalf of the Geographical Society of Ireland.  Dr Adrian Kavanagh, Department of Geography, NUI Maynooth, enlightened and entertained his audience with a talk entitled ‘From “Irlande Douze Points” to “Walking the Streets in the Rain”:  Has Geography destroyed Ireland’s Eurovision prospects?’.  Applying research techniques borrowed from electoral geography, his analysis demonstrated the importance of voting blocs to a song’s success, but also the effects of rule changes, song language and even the order in which a song is drawn in the contest.
