Bequest by Professor James Hurt

St Patrick’s College has received a generous donation of books from the private collection of Professor James Hurt. James Hurt, Professor of English at the University of Illinois, passed away earlier this year. He expressed a wish in his will that a collection of books (primarily scholarship on Joyce, Beckett and Yeats) be donated to the library in St Patrick’s College. The donation is sizeable and contains approximately 500 items. The collection will be available shortly in the library.
Professor Hurt taught at St Patrick’s College during 1987-88 and he retained close friendships with members of the staff in the College over the years. Between 1988 and 2003 he brought groups of American College Students to Dublin for Summer Courses in Irish Studies. Professor Hurt was a distinguished playwright, critic, and academic. Deepest sympathy is expressed to his wife, Zohreh, and his family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
A link to the eulogy delivered at Professor Hurt’s memorial service by the renowned American novelist Richard Powers is available here.
