The Inaugural "John McGahern Irish Writing Commemorative Lecture"

The inaugural “John McGahern Irish Writing Commemorative Lecture” took place in St Patrick’s College on the 10th May. It was organised by the English Department and it is planned to be an annual event. The evening was a great success. Dr Derek Hand of the English Department gave a talk “Saying Goodbye to John: or Thank you for the Day” celebrating McGahern’s work as affirming the importance of community and the potency of shared human experience and shared goals. Novelist Joseph O’Connor delivered his own tribute to John McGahern and then read from his latest best selling novel Redemption Falls. It was a fitting celebration of John McGahern's writing and also a celebration of the best Irish writing of the contemporary moment.
