Professor Jack Zipes

Jack Zipes is one of the world’s foremost authorities on children’s literature and culture. He is professor of German and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota. Among his many major publications are, Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion (1983), The Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood (1983), Don't Bet on the Prince: Contemporary Feminist Fairy Tales in North America and England (1986) Creative Storytelling: Building Community, Changing Lives (1995), Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales, Children, and the Culture Industry (1997), Sticks and Stones: The Troublesome Success of Children’s Literature from Slovenly Peter to Harry Potter (2001), Speaking Out: Storytelling and Creative Drama for Children (2004). He has also translated The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (1987), The Fairy Tales of Hermann Hesse (1995) and Laura Gonzenbach’s Sicilian folk and fairy tales, under the title Beautiful Angiola (2005) He edited The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales (2000). He is editor-in-chief of the Routledge book series on Children’s literature and Culture, was general editor of the Norton Anthology of Children’s Literature (2005), and served as editor-in-chief of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Children’s Literature. In addition to his scholarly work, he is an active storyteller in public schools and has worked with children's theatres in France, Germany, Canada, and the United States.
