Limerick Early School Leaving Strategy
On Wednesday April 29th, the first meeting took place, in St Patrick’s College, of the Expert Advisory Group for the Limerick Early School Leaving Strategy under the Limerick Regeneration Programme.
The initial group includes Dr Paul Downes, Director of the Educational Disadvantage Centre, St Patrick’s College, Dr Peter Archer, The Educational Research Centre (ERC), St Patrick’s College, Dr Selina McCoy, The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), Dr Michelle Share, The Children’s Research Centre, Trinity College, Dublin, Mr Neil Haran and Mr Martin Galvin, Strategic Innovation in Education, Limerick, and Mr Declan Blackett, Limerick Regeneration Agency.
The goals of the Advisory Group include:
- To contribute to the development of a strategic framework for an early school leaving strategy in Limerick and provide expert advice on the direction and development of this strategy.
- To support the development of a multi-agency, multi-dimensional early school leaving strategy, drawing on expertise and latest thinking from a variety of professional backgrounds.
- To advise (and, where possible, make documents available) on prior, current and forthcoming national and international research and policy developments with the potential to influence and impact on an early school leaving strategy in Limerick.
- To provide best practice recommendations from national and international arenas that may be relevant and transferable to Limerick, particularly from the perspective of a) long-term preventative approaches and b) immediate/shorter-term intervention strategies.
- To assist in the identification of radical and systemic changes within education and educational support systems that have the potential to impact on rates of early school leaving in Limerick.
