Great Children's Writers

Following the success of its Great Irish Writers series, the Irish Independent, compiled and promoted a companion series, this time a set of children’s books that includes both international children’s classics, books much loved by generations of children and some of the classics of the
future.

One feature of the series is its distinctive Irish slant. Among its books are well-established favourites such as Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver's Travels and The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde; twentieth-century classics such as The Bookshop on the Quay by Patricia Lynch and The Island of Horses by
Eilis Dillon; bestsellers like Under the Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlon-McKenna, and novels by Irish writers who have won international acclaim, such as Benny and Omar by Eoin Colfer and Sisters ... No Way! by Siobhan Parkinson.

Mary Shine Thompson, College Research Coordinator at St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, wrote the biographical notes on the authors and the sleeve notes for the collection.

The 20 Irish Independent Great Children’s Books Series 2006 are:
