Maths Week 2011 Events in St Patrick's College

Javier Aramayona, School of Mathematics, NUIG

As part of Maths Week 2011, Javier Aramayona from the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Applied Mathematics in NUI Galway gave a fascinating talk on The Shape of Space. There were two sessions held on 20 October: one from 10-11 am attended by 5th and 6th classes of St. Patrick's Boys National School.  This talk was very well received by the school pupils and teachers alike.  Equally well received was the second session from 1-2 pm, attended by SPD staff and students.

A question to which no scientist knows the answer is 'What is the shape of our universe?' Actually, maybe you never thought that there could be more than one possibility for its shape!! Javier took an insightful journey into the different shapes a universe can have, allowing us to explore playing pool on "weirdly shaped" tables, drawing triangles on Pringles, and constructing worlds in which there's no distinction between "left" and "right".

Javier is pictured above, and also below with Dr Maurice O'Reilly, Head of Mathematics, and Dr Madeeha Khalid of the Maths Department.
