Filíocht Ghrá na Gaeilge
Díolaim chuimsitheach a rianaíonn traidisiún na filíochta grá i nGaeilge ón luathaois go dtí an nua-aois. Seo chugainn léargas iontach ar phaisean agus ar neart an ghrá. Pléitear gach gné den ghrá san dánta agus sna hamhráin seo - meidhir an ghrá óig; greann agus suairceas an ghrá; cumha agus croíbhriseadh; dúil agus grá gan fháil; agus an grá iompaithe ina fhuath. Tá cumhacht mhothálach na bhfilí féin go mór chun cinn agus iad ag céiliúradh chastacht an ghrá. Breacann Ciarán Mac Murchaidh an comhthéacs liteartha inar cumadh na dánta sainiúla seo agus cuireann brí nua i dtéacsanna clasaiceacha do phobal úr. Maisithe go healaíonta ag Anna Nielsen.
A SPECIAL READING OF LOVE POETRY IN IRISH IN WHITEFRIAR ST CARMELITE CHURCH, 56 AUNGIER STREET, DUBLIN 2 AT 11.00AM MASS ON ST VALENTINE’S DAY 14 FEBRUARY 2009.
Poetry read by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Liam Ó Muirthile and Colm Breathnach. With traditional love songs in Irish sung by Lorcán Mac Mathúna. The poems and songs that will be performed come from the recently published anthology Filíocht Ghrá na Gaeilge/Love Poems in Irish, edited by Ciarán Mac Murchaidh (Irish Department, St Patrick's College) and published by Cois Life. This event is supported by Poetry Ireland in association with the IMRAM Irish Language Literature Festival and Cois Life.
Love Poems in Irish
Spanning over a thousand years of poetry and song in the Irish language, this anthology celebrates the power of love. Here it is in all its aspects - the heady rush of first love; its capacity for fun and levity; sorrow, heartbreak and unrequited love; and the thin line between love and hate. Editor Ciarán Mac Murchaidh brilliantly places this literature within its historical context, injecting new life into classic texts. The passion of the poets themselves is always to the fore as they travel love's twisted highways. Anna's Nielsen's illustrations add a playful new dimension.
Shrine of St Valentine, Whitefriar Street Church
In 1835 an Irish Carmelite by the name of John Spratt was visiting Rome. Whilst there, he was asked to preach at the famous Jesuit Church in the city, the Gesu. The elite of Rome flocked to hear him and he received many tokens of esteem from the doyens of the Church. One such token came from Pope Gregory XVI (1831-1846) and were the remains of Saint Valentine.
On 10 November 1836, the Reliquary containing the remains arrived in Dublin and were brought to Whitefriar Street Church. With the death of Fr Spratt interest in the relics died away and they went into storage. During a major renovation in the 1960s, they were returned to prominence with a special shrine constructed to house them. Irene Broe’s statue depicts the saint in the red vestments of a martyr and holding a crocus in his hand.
The shrine is visited throughout the year by couples who come to pray to Valentine and to ask him to watch over them in their lives together. The feast day of the saint on February 14 is very popular - and many couples come to the celebrations which include a Blessing of Rings for those about to be married. On the feast day, the Reliquary is removed from beneath the side-altar and is placed before the high altar in the church and there venerated at the Masses. At the 11.00am and 3.15pm Masses there are special sermons and also a short ceremony for the Blessing of Rings for those about to be married.
