Music connections....... DCU's Helix and St Patrick's College Chapel

St Patrick's College Choir at the Helix - December 2011

Congratulations to St Patrick's College Choir, Trad Group, and classical pianists, who staged a wonderful lunchtime concert in the Helix as part of "Music Connections in DCU". This event was held on Wednesday 14 December, as part of DCU's Arts and Culture Initiative, and celebrates the wide and diverse musical culture of DCU and its Colleges. The event was introduced by Professor Eithne Guilfoyle, DCU, while Dr John Buckley of St Patrick's College Music Department was MC.

St Patrick's Choir, under the baton of Dr John O'Flynn, Head of Music, presented the following programme:

Send Down the Rain, by Joyce Eilers; Shenandoah, arranged by Linda Spevacek; Pat-a-Pan, by Mark Burroughs; The Shepherds' Farewell to the Holy family, Berlioz; The Wexford Carol, arranged by Ben Parry; A Polish Lullaby, arranged by Gwen Arch; Carol of the Bells, by Mykola Leontovich.

The Trad Group played an array of Traditional Irish Music. Classical Piano Pieces included Rachmaninov's Prelude in B Minor Op. 32, No. 10, by Anna Bourke; and Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu played by Catherine Murphy.

Trad Group in the Helix

On the previous evening in St Patrick's College Chapel, the College choir sang a range of Christmas Carols, and the Trad Group, played a selection of traditional music, while reflections and readings were read. The Chapel was decorated to the highest standard including a tree, hundreds of candles, and the Crib which was prepared by Andrea Cleary and her Art Class.

Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all the students and staff who were involved in making all the arrangements and in giving their time for rehearsals for both events over the past few months.
