North South Student Teacher Exchange
Along with students from Stranmillis and St Mary’s College (Belfast), Froebel College, Marino Institute of Education, Church of Ireland College of Education, Rathmines, Mary Immaculate College (Limerick), four second year BEd students from St Patrick’s College (Michelle Brennan, Pauline Flanagan, Anne Cawley and Ciara O’Callaghan) are participants in the North South Student Teacher Exchange Programme. The project is funded by the Standing Conference on Teacher Education, North and South (SCoTENS), and is unique in Europe in developing cross-jurisdictional teacher practice experiences for student teachers. This year, participating students from the colleges in the South will undertake their spring teaching practice in schools in Belfast and students from the North will undertake teaching practice in schools in Dublin. St Patrick’s BNS, Drumcondra will host four students from St Mary’s and Stranmillis. The project also involves the Directors of Teaching Practice in the various colleges and the exchange of practices and dialogue around teaching, learning, and evaluation. The involvement this year of the Students’ Union, North and South, is an important development in encouraging the voice of participating students in the process of learning and teaching, and in helping students settle into their new environs for teaching practice. Mr Eoin Bolger (President, Students Union, St Patrick’s College), Mr Ciarán O’Rourke (Vice President Students Union, St Patrick’s College), Dr Bernadette Ní Áingléis (Director of Teaching Practice, St Patrick’s College) along with participating BEd students represented St Patrick’s College at the North South Orientation Day (launch of the 2008/2009 exchange programme) in Froebel College recently.
