Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA)

A National Symposium took place in Croke Park on 18 April on the outcomes of PISA 2006.  PISA is an OECD assessment of the skills and knowledge of 15-year olds that takes place every three years.    Ireland’s main report on the study, conducted by the Educational Research Centre, St Patrick's College  was launched by Gearóid Ó Conluain, Deputy Chief Inspector, Department of Education and Science, at this event.

In 2006, approximately 400,000 students in 57 countries (including Ireland) took part in the assessment, which focused on scientific literacy, but also assessed students’ reading and mathematical literacy.  The aim of the symposium was to allow people from a range of disciplines to reflect on and discuss the outcomes of PISA 2006.  The launch and symposium were jointly organised by the Department of Education and Science and the Educational Research Centre, St Patrick’s College.
