The Outdoor Classroom
The Outdoor Classroom: Dublin Zoo Educational Services recently hosted two visits for Post Graduate Diploma in Primary Teaching students.
The visits included a talk by the educational services staff and a tour of the elephant and tiger enclosures. The visits emerged from the students' work in SESE in early childhood education and the emphasis on engaging children in outdoor spaces. The Zoo run a number of programmes as part of the Primary Science initiative including, Woodland Habitat, Cycle of Life, All about Plants, Mini-beast Safari, Explore Africa and Rainforest Discovery. There is particular focus on environmental awareness and conservation in the programmes.
The students found the visit most informative and were particular taken with their visit inside the elephant house and the tour and talk given by Ciáran, the elephant keeper who spoke in great detail and with great commitment about the care of the elephants in his charge.
