Reception to mark Kodaly Summer School/Visit by Hungarian Ambassador, Mr Ferenc Jari
A short reception to mark the return of the Kodàly Society of Ireland's music summer school to St Patrick’s College was hosted on the evening of 9 July. The event was attended by Hungarian and Irish faculty for the summer school, by past and present committee members of the Kodàly Society of Ireland (KSI), as well as by Music Department and other College staff. Also in attendance were his Excellency, the Hungarian ambassador, Mr Ferenc Jári, accompanied by Mrs Melinda Jári.
The Kodàly ‘concept’ is an internationally acclaimed system of music education based on a methodology developed by the Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodàly. The first Irish-based summer school took place in St Patrick’s College in 1983, and again in 1985, following the initiative of former music lecturer Colum Ó Cléirigh. July 2009 marked the return of the summer school to its original home, with a record attendance of sixty-five participants comprising teachers, professional musicians and third-level students (including a number of students from St Patrick’s College who were awarded KSI scholarships) The week-long course culminated in a choral and chamber music recital in the College Chapel on the evening of Friday 10 July.
