Dedication to James Hurt

The last production of A Doll's House in St Patrick's was directed in 1988 by Jim Hurt, Visiting Professor from the University of Illinois. An outstanding scholar and himself the author of a distinguished book on Ibsen, Catiline's Dream (1972), Jim brought the courtesy, kindness and gentle wit which he emanated on a daily basis in the lecture hall or tutorial to the often fraught task of play directing. Without a trace of arrogance or impatience--he was particularly gentle with inexperienced actors--Jim's sensitivity, professional and personal, made for a memorable realization of A Doll's House, at once subtle, unforced and thought-provoking.

Sadly, Jim passed away in summer of this year. A moving token of his regard for St Patrick's was his bequeathal of his personal library to a college he had grown to love.

One of the most beautiful moments in A Doll's House occurs in the final act, where Dr Rank is taking his final farewells of Nora and Helmer: Nora, whom he loves, having lit his cigar, Rank departs on the deeply resonant line, 'Thank you for the light.' In dedicating this production to you, Jim, SPARC and St Patrick's College thank you for yourunforgettable light.
