Students' Union Ghana Classroom Appeal

As part of their main fund-raising campaign this year, more than €10,000 has been raised by St Patrick's College Students' Union for the Adekyee (“New Dawn”) Schools Project in Ghana.  The money has been donated to the severely disadvantaged community of Jasikan, Ghana, through Gabriel Mante, the local Bishop.  The money which was raised mainly through a ‘sponsor a brick’ campaign will provide new classroom accommodation in local schools.  Dr Carmel Dinan of the Education Department and Pauric Bolton, Welfare Officer, Students' Union and Sine Rohanna Friel, Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Students' Union, visited Ghana recently as part of the project. 

 

 

Jasikan, located in the northern part of the Volta Region, is one of the poorest parts of Ghana.  It’s people are hard working and enterprising with their life organised around the production of daily food crops and few opportunities to rise above a subsistence living standard.  Education is seen as the key to breaking out of this cycle of poverty.  Parents are prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that their children attend school.  However, the area lacks even basic educational facilities. Many of the existing schools in the region are built of mud bricks and wood and in various stages of dilapidation. Classroom furniture and teaching resources are practically non-existent.  The Catholic Diocese of Jasikan has embarked the ‘New Dawn’ project to provide five new ‘model’ schools to cater for the educational needs of its children.
