SCoTENS Annual Conference
The 2007 annual conference of Standing Committee on Teacher Education North and South was held at the Grand Hotel in Malahide on 22/23 November. The theme of the conference was "teaching in the knowledge society". The keynote speakers were Professor John Furlong, Director, Department of Education, University of Oxford; David Istance, OECD Centre for Education Research and Innovation; Eamon Stack, Chief Inspector, DES, Dublin; Dr Roger Austin, School of Education, University of Ulster; and Keith Bartley, CEO, General Teaching Council for England. In addition, there were a series of workshops on related themes.
Opening the Conference, the Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin, TD, complimented SCoTENS on its work and described it as a model for North-South cooperation. She highlighted the challenges facing teacher educators in the knowledge society but expressed her confidence in the quality of the teaching force.
SCoTENS is administered on behalf of its institutional members by the Centre for Cross Border Studies in Armagh. The current joint Chairs are Prof Richard McMinn and Dr Pauric Travers. The SCoTENS website is www.scotens.org
