Rewood Spore Drip Wins Award
Andrea Cleary, Lecturer in Visual Arts, Education Department, St Partrick's College, recently won an award for her 'Redwood Spore Drip' sculpture at the Sculpture in Context 2010 Exhibition. Sculpture in Context was established in 1985 by a group of sculptors. Their aim was to work on behalf of fellow sculptors to provide a space for exhibiting sculptures in venues outside of the normal gallery context. Each year a different panel of selectors are invited to adjudicate this open exhibition, leading to an exciting mix of mediums and styles.
Andrea's piece was inspired by the poor condition of the Great Redwood tree. It’s condition required a rest from visitors walking on the area around the tree (who compressed the soil around the roots). ‘Redwood Spore Drip’ was the resulting sculpture which hung from one of the stepped branches . The large spores are released from their pods to the ground where they can aerate the soil. The Sculpture is over 60 metres long and is made from dyed sheeps wool and felted into dangling structures on long stems .
The sculpture is available to view in Room E220 until the end of November.
