Sculpture in Context Exhibition 2011

This year’s sculpture in context which runs until 21 October celebrates ten years at the Botanical Gardens in Glasnevin. The aim of the exhibition is to provide space for exhibiting sculptures outside the normal gallery context. Each year a different Panel of judges are invited to adjudicate this open exhibition leading to an exciting mix of mediums and styles.
Over 120 sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm house, and Curvilinear Range with smaller works exhibited above the visitors centre.
One sculpture is by Andrea Cleary lecturer in Visual Arts, St Patrick's College. 'Zelkova Carphosis' is the name of the piece. The inspiration is drawn from the shapes and forms of the tree, its situation- children seen playing at the base of the tree and imagination.
The tree is commonly used in streetsides(in warmer countries) for its canopy and shade for people and cars, this coupled with the co-incidence that 'Car' is hidden in the name have conspired to create an imagined genetic transformation within the tree. This Autumn the leaves turning colour will also reveal the emergence of sheltered gills and flanges which cocoon little cars nestled in a trunk crevice. The years of morphing are evident in the colourful layers of the gill structures.
