Strangers to Citizens
Strangers to Citizens: the Irish in Europe, 1600-1800
As part of the exhibition Strangers to Citizens: the Irish in Europe, 1600-1800 currently running at the National Library of Ireland, Dr Marian Lyons (St Patrick’s College) and Dr Tom O’Connor (NUIM), curators, gave a lecture at the library on 20 April. The lecture presented an insight into the origins and current work of the Irish in Europe Project which has been to the fore in coordinating and leading pioneering research into the varied lives of Irish émigrés who settled on the Continent in the early modern era. Since the Project commenced in 1997, Drs O’Connor and Lyons have organised four international conferences, published a book and three collections of essays, launched a dedicated Irish in Europe monograph series and website, and designed the NLI exhibition. In this, the final lecture in the Strangers to Citizens lecture series, the speakers explained the background to the exhibition, outlining how the Project has evolved over the past twelve years, responding to exciting scholarly and technological challenges and possibilities in this field.
