Gulliver's Travels discussed for 'One City One Book'

On Sunday 15 June, Dr Mary Shine Thompson, Dean of Humanities, St Patrick's College, chaired a discussion in the Peacock Theatre on Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, with writers Victoria Glendinning, John Mullan and Bruce Arnold.

Poet, polemicist and wit, Jonathan Swift is best known for his satirical masterpiece Gulliver’s Travels. Its unerring gaze on man’s limitless capacity for fruitless intrigue remains strikingly contemporary almost three centuries after publication.

To celebrate Dublin’s One City One Book initiative, this special panel event sets sail for Lilliput and Brobdingag with three accomplished travelling companions.

Biographer, critic, broadcaster and writer Victoria Glendinning brought Dublin’s adoptive son into sharp focus with her acclaimed ‘character portrait’ Jonathan Swift.

Author of How Novels Work and Anonymity – A Secret History of English Literature, Professor John Mullan is an 18th-century authority.

Bruce Arnold is one of Ireland’s leading journalists and critics. He has written extensively on Irish cultural matters, and recently published a libretto for a contemporary opera on Swift’s life.
