Historic day for Teacher Education

The Teaching Council has within its statutory remit the accreditation of programmes in
teacher education. The Council has now commenced that task. St Patrick's
College's Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary Teaching) is the first of
almost forty programmes across the area of teacher education to undergo
reaccreditation. This is an important quality assurance procedure which is of
great significance for course providers, the Teaching Council and the
education system. As part of the procedure, a review group from the Teaching Council
visited the College from 9-11 March, meeting staff and students, inspecting
facilities, observing lectures and workshops, interviewing former students
and school principals and observing supervision of students on teaching
practice. A formal report will be issued in due course. The members of the
panel (pictured above with senior staff of the College) were Dr Séamus McGuinness, Chairperson; Gail Eason, Stranmillis; Jerry Cronin, UL; Milo Walsh, Primary Teacher/School Development Planning Support Service; Tom Hamilton, Teaching Council Scotland; Risteard Ó Broin, Inspector DES; and Áine Lawlor, CEO Teaching Council.
St Patrick's College which has enthusiastically engaged with
the process, welcomes the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance the quality
of its programmes.
