Joyce and the Idea of a Common Culture
The Postgraduate Society, St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra, will hold its first public session on Wednesday, 30th January 2008 with a talk on Joyce and the Idea of a Common Culture, by Professor Declan Kiberd.

Declan Kiberd holds the Chair of Anglo-Irish literature and Drama at University College Dublin. Professor Kiberd is an internationally renowned scholar and cultural commentator. He has been Visiting Lecturer in over 30 countries and is the recipient of many literary and academic awards. Professor Kiberd is one of Ireland’s foremost intellectuals; he is currently a member of the National Advisory Panel (NESDO), the Royal Irish Academy and the Board of the Abbey Theatre. He has served as member of the Forum on the Future of Broadcasting, Chair of the Public Libraries and Arts Government Commission, and member of the Irish Manuscripts Commission and Cultural Relations Committee.
Professor Kiberd is an authority on Irish literature written in the English and Irish languages and has written and edited many books on Irish literature and culture. His ground-breaking book, Inventing Ireland: the Literature of the Modern Nation (Jonathan Cape: London 1995), instigated radical changes in critical thinking within the study of Irish literature. Other books by Professor Kiberd include: Irish Classics (Granta: London 2000); Idir Dhá Chultúr (Essays on Interaction of Gaelic and English-language culture), (Coiscéim: Áth Cliath 1993); The Irish Writer And The World, (Cambridge: University Press 2005); Synge and the Irish Language (Macmillan: London 1979).
