Awakening Irish Identities: the Ulster Earls in Baroque Europe
This highly successful conference, jointly organised by the Embassy of Ireland to Italy, the Embassy of Ireland to the Holy See, the Pontifical Irish College, Rome and the Irish in Europe Project directors, Dr Marian Lyons (St Patrick’s College) and Dr Thomas O’Connor, took place at the Pontifical Irish College on 26-28 October 2007 to mark the 400th anniversary of the departure of the Ulster earls for continental Europe.
Speakers included Professor Joe Bergin (Manchester University), Dr Steve Murdoch (St Andrew’s), Dr Bruno Boute (Belgian Institute, Rome), Professors Raymond Gillespie, Colm Lennon and Ruairí Ó hUiginn (NUI Maynooth), Professor Laurence Brockliss (Oxford), Drs Hiram Morgan, David Edwards and Jason Harris (UCC), Professor Martin Stone (Leuven), Dr Gráinne McLoughlin (University of Ulster), Professor Ciaran Brady (TCD), and Dr Carla Benocci (Rome).

The event was attended by approximately 200 delegates from Ireland, Italy, Spain, France and the US who heard papers on subjects ranging from the flight of the earls in British-Spanish diplomacy to Irish language culture in the Low Countries in the Baroque Age and Irish scholasticism in early modern Europe. The conference concluded with a special memorial mass for the earls and their entourage in their burial place, San Pietro in Montorio. The proceedings of this conference are due to be published in 2009.
