Trial by Jury
On 29 and 30 April St Patrick's College enjoyed a lively and inventive production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, first produced in 1875 and the famous pair’s first collaboration together. Some of St Pats outstanding solo singers—Gavan Ring, Grainne Carroll, John Ruddy, and a terrific ‘First-Year find’, Claire Walshe—featured in the principal roles, as did tenor Brian Gilligan, who unfortunately was struck down with laryngitis on opening night and had to speak his lines –which he did very effectively: ‘Raymond Chandler meets Gilbert and Sullivan!’

An excellent chorus and orchestra were conducted by Dr Marion Doherty Hayden, Head of Music, St Patrick's College, who was also musical director; director was Dr Pat Burke, English Department, St Patrick's College. Since both are retiring this year, Trial by Jury may have been their ‘swan song’—but one never knows!
