ZITEP Exchange Visit Between Zambia and Ireland
Dr Therese McPhillips and Ms Miriam Ryan (Education Department, St Patrick's College, Drumconda) were two of the lecturers who took part in a recent ZITEP (Zambia Ireland Teacher Education Partnership) exchange visit. They were joined in this trip by Ms Ailbhe Kenny of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and Mr Paddy Madden of Marino Institute of Education.
The group spent a very busy two weeks in Zambian partner colleges. As well as team teaching with lecturers from their respective curriculum areas, they also facilitated a workshop in each college on assessment for learning. Further time was given to visiting primary schools where they also had the chance to team teach in this context. A more complete account of visit activities can be found in the ZITEP area of the St Patrick’s College moodle site.
Participating Zambian lecturers will soon be embarking on action research projects related to ZITEP learning, some of which will be undertaken together with Irish co-researchers. This activity will be valuable, not only for the findings of the research itself, but also for the fact that with the Zambian ministry of education as a ZITEP partner, the college lecturers will, perhaps for the first time, be involved in generating evidence which can be used for policy and curriculum development.
If you are a lecturer in any of the Irish colleges and would like to participate in ZITEP contact Mary Kerr on 01-8842348 or at mary.kerr@spd.dcu.ie. The next exchange visit to Zambia will be taking place in June and volunteers from all curriculum areas are currently being recruited.
