Fulbright Scholarship for Dr Gillian O'Brien
Dr Gillian O'Brien, History Department, St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for 2008-09 at the Newberry Library, Chicago. It is to enable her to pursue her investigation into the murder of Dr Patrick Cronin, an Irish-American who was killed in Chicago in 1889. The investigation into his death and the subsequent trial of five men (one of whom was a senior detective) accused of the murder dominated newspapers across America and as far afield as London and Dublin for six months. Cronin's murder had serious repercussions for secret societies, for the Irish-American community and for the Chicago police force.
