"Lesson Study" Professional Development Group
On September 13th, primary teachers gathered to participate in the inaugural Lesson Study group, lead by Dolores Corcoran (Lecturer in Mathematics Education) and Regina Murphy (Director of Inservice Education), and supported by the Department of Education and Science. The model for Lesson Study originates in Japan where teachers improve their teaching through a process of jointly planning, observing, analysing, and refining actual classroom lessons called “research lessons”. Lesson study is widely credited for the steady improvement of mathematics and science teaching in Japanese primary schools and the Drumcondra initiative marks the first of its kind in Ireland. Dr Catherine Lewis, an expert in Lesson Study in the USA, addressed the group on September 20th and shared video examples of lesson study in practice in both Japan and USA.
