The College network operates as a Microsoft Windows NT based system. The computer should be able to accept allocation of an Internet address provided from a DHCP server based on such a network.
Wireless networking is available in certain locations, but as yet the availability is not standardised.
The processor and memory of these computers should be of adequate performance according to the operating system manufactures recommendations. You are advised to purchase as high a specification as you can afford. This is to ensure the product remains useful for as long as possible. A three year warranty is advised. You are also advised to take out Insurance. If living at home it should be possible to include it in the 'All Risks' of a normal household insurance policy.
The basic service provided on the campus is access to Internet based services this includes on-campus services, many of which are now accessible via the Internet using your College Network Account.
A suitable current web browser is essential for these services.
Services have been tested with both Internet Explorer 6.0 and FireFox 1.0.
It is highly recommended that anti virus and other security products be supplied with the computer. The College, while taking steps to secure its own network, cannot be held responsible for infections arising through the user accessing external sites or using external services. Please note that because of firewall restrictions not all anti virus products will update on-campus. You are advised to do this via a normal phone line account to an ISP.
You should also be able to access network supported services such as personal workspace and course assignment folders.
The College provides Microsoft Office 2000 (or later) on all its Student and Staff computers. You should include a suitable office product that can supply files compatible with this for completion of course assignments.
To use the College printers you will need to transfer your files to a College computer. You should be able to do this either via your personal workspace or using a USB Memory Key. 128MB is the minimum size recommended.
